A rug can anchor a room, define a zone, or make a space feel twice as large — but only if it's the right size. Too small, and it floats awkwardly in the middle of the floor. Too large, and it overwhelms the furniture. Here's a practical guide to getting it right, room by room.
The Golden Rule: Furniture Legs On
The most reliable principle in rug sizing is this: at least the front legs of your key furniture pieces should sit on the rug. This visually connects the furniture to the rug and grounds the seating arrangement. Having all four legs on the rug creates an even more cohesive, luxurious feel — and requires a larger rug, typically 240x340cm or above in a standard living room.
Living Room
For a typical living room with a three-seat sofa and two armchairs, a 170x240cm(approx) rug is the most common starting point. If your room is generous or you want all furniture legs on the rug, step up to 200x300cm or 250x350cm. The rug should extend at least 30cm beyond the sofa on each side.
Avoid anything smaller than 160x230cm in a living room — it will look like a bath mat regardless of how beautiful the design is.
Dining Room
The rule here is simple: the rug must be large enough that chairs remain on it when pulled out. Add at least 60cm to each side of your table. For a standard 6-seat dining table (180x90cm), you'll need a rug of at least 300x210cm.
A round rug works beautifully under a round table — aim for a diameter at least 60cm wider than the table.
Bedroom
In a bedroom, the rug should extend 50–60cm beyond each side of the bed so you step onto it when you get up. For a king-size bed (180cm wide), a 240x170cm rug placed two-thirds under the bed works well. Alternatively, two runners placed on either side of the bed create a symmetrical, boutique-hotel feel.
Hallway & Entryway
Runners are the natural choice here. Leave 10–15cm of floor visible on each side of the runner for a balanced look. Length-wise, the runner should cover the majority of the hallway, stopping short of doorways.
How to Test Before You Buy
Before ordering, use masking tape or newspaper to mark out the rug dimensions on your floor. Live with it for a day. You'll quickly see whether it feels right — and you'll almost always wish you'd gone larger.
